Malaysia took a strategic leap in the electric vehicle (xEV) sector with the launch of the Malaysian Standard (MS) 2818 Battery Passport for Electrified Vehicles – General Requirements, marking the first EV battery passport standard in ASEAN.
Developed by Jabatan Standard Malaysia (JSM) under the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI), in collaboration with the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute, MS 2818 sets a regional benchmark for a transparent, sustainable and efficient xEV battery ecosystem.
JSM highlighted that the new standard serves as a comprehensive digital record, tracking key information across the lifecycle of an EV battery from production to disposal.
“By enhancing battery traceability, transparency and supporting lifecycle sustainability, MS 2818 aims to strengthen regulatory oversight and promote responsible battery management.
“MS 2818 is a strategic catalyst in building a robust, innovative and sustainable xEV industry ecosystem in Malaysia,” JSM said, adding that the standard also aligns with the country’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and supporting the growth and adoption of electric vehicles nationwide.
