A Peaceful Alternative In Vietnam’s Northern Highlands

While Lunar New Year celebrations elsewhere centre on crowds and city energy, Garrya Mù Cang Chải offers a quieter alternative. Set amid the misty rice terraces of Vietnam’s northern highlands, the retreat presents Tet through a slower lens, shaped by landscape and local tradition.

The focus is less on spectacle and more on starting the year with intention, appealing to travellers seeking a calmer reset.

Wellbeing underpins the Tet programme. New Year’s Eve is marked by a candlelit sound meditation featuring tongue drums, singing bowls, and paired with warm tea.

The first morning of the year begins with sunrise yoga in the cool mountain air, overlooking the highlands. During the festive period, Tet Serenity Afternoon Tea offers a relaxed pause, with regional teas and traditional sweets.

Dining reflects the same sense of place. Tet set menus feature seasonal highland ingredients and dishes linked to reunion and abundance.

By day, the mood turns more informal at the Taste of the Highlands street food market, inspired by local chợ phiên and offers regional snacks and handmade treats. Guests can also participate in Tet cooking sessions and healthy mixology classes focused on festive dishes and local drinks. Cultural activities emphasise genuine engagement with nearby Hmong communities.

Rather than staged performances, guests are invited to observe Tet as it unfolds, from helping pound bánh dày to witnessing year-end household customs, community rituals and spring festivals centred on renewal.

From the sixth day of the Lunar New Year, the area enters the highland games and wedding season. Traditional games, pao throwing and wedding rituals mark the arrival of spring, bringing villages together.

Overall, Garrya Mù Cang Chải offers a Tet experience rooted in authenticity and balance, where heritage and wellbeing set a measured tone for the year ahead.
