Malaysia Airlines is turning up the heat on its China comeback, officially relaunching flights from Kuala Lumpur to Chengdu with a standout 91% load factor, underscoring strong pent-up demand for travel between Malaysia and Western China.
Adding to the fanfare, the inaugural flight MH526, which took off from KLIA on Jan 9, 2026, was operated on the carrier’s Manchester United-themed aircraft, a cheeky nod to the football club’s devoted following in Chengdu.
Passengers enjoyed a festive send-off infused with signature Malaysian Hospitality, complete with exclusive merchandise and an appearance by senior Malaysia Aviation Group executives, making the route’s return feel more like a celebration than a simple departure.
With Chengdu back on the map, Malaysia Airlines now serves seven destinations across Greater China, reflecting the airline’s confidence in the market.
The KL-Chengdu route will operate up to seven times weekly and unlock seamless onward connections through Kuala Lumpur to ASEAN hotspots, South Asia and Australasia, a boost for both leisure travellers and business flyers.
The timing for the relaunch of the Chengdu flight couldn’t be sweeter as Malaysia and China’s mutual visa-free arrangements have just been extended, giving tourists more time to explore and enticing new travel flows ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.
The relaunch also builds on deepening Malaysia-China ties across the aviation ecosystem. Just weeks ago, MASkargo transported Malaysia’s newest giant pandas from Chengdu to Kuala Lumpur as part of a renewed conservation agreement, proving the bilateral relationship is thriving on both wings and wildlife.
For travellers eyeing spicy hotpot sessions in Sichuan or island escapes in Sabah, the message is clear: The Malaysia-Chengdu air bridge is officially back, and flying high.
