AirBorneo has firmed up an order for eight new ATR aircraft as it moves to modernise Malaysia’s rural air services fleet, strengthening air connectivity across East Malaysia’s remote and underserved communities.
The deal, announced on Feb 3 with aircraft manufacturer ATR, comprises five ATR 72-600s and three ATR 42-600s, with purchase rights for four additional aircraft. Deliveries are scheduled between 2027 and 2029.
The order marks a key milestone in AirBorneo’s evolution into Sarawak’s state-owned airline, following the Sarawak government’s acquisition of MASwings in 2025 and its rebranding as AirBorneo. The airline currently operates eight ATR 72-500 aircraft inherited from MASwings, with the new-generation -600 series set to anchor a more efficient and resilient rural air services operation.
AirBorneo emphasised that the new aircraft will enhance passenger comfort, operational reliability and service capability, as they feature advanced avionics, modern navigation systems and improved cabins.
“They are also equipped to support medical stretcher operations and are optimised for the demanding conditions of Borneo’s regional and rural routes,” AirBorneo added.
It then highlighted that a mixed fleet of ATR 42-600 and ATR 72-600 aircraft will allow the company to right-size capacity across varying route profiles while benefiting from strong fleet commonality. The additional purchase rights also provide flexibility for future growth, including potential regional expansion within the BIMP-EAGA corridor.
AirBorneo Chief Executive Officer Megat Ardian said the partnership with ATR underlines the airline’s commitment to delivering reliable, safe and modern air services.
