Toyota is accelerating its shift toward electrified vehicles (EVs) by boosting the production of hybrid and plug-in hybrid models to about 6.7 million units by 2028, a 30% increase over its 2026 target, Reuters reported quoting report by Nikkei.
The world’s largest automaker is also targeting total global production of around 11.3 million vehicles in 2028, roughly 10% higher than its 2026 plan. Hybrids are expected to account for about 60% of overall output, up from around 50% this year, reflecting Toyota’s growing emphasis on hybrid technology as a key pillar of its electrification strategy.
Toyota said the figures are indicative projections shared annually with suppliers and partners to support planning, stressing that they are reference estimates rather than firm production or sales targets.
Nonetheless, the revised outlook highlights Toyota’s confidence in hybrids as it navigates uneven EV adoption, regulatory shifts and infrastructure constraints across global markets.
