Japan-based Menicon Co Ltd’s wholly owned subsidiary, Menicon Malaysia Sdn Bhd, has officially launched its RM1 billion smart factory at Kulim Hi-Tech Park, marking the company’s most advanced manufacturing site globally.
The facility integrates automated production, logistics, warehousing and quality control into a digitally connected ecosystem, enabling large-scale, high-efficiency production of silicone hydrogel daily disposable contact lenses.
Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Sikh Abdul Majid said the project reflects strong investor confidence and positions Malaysia as a hub for high-value, innovation-driven manufacturing, while fostering local talent and technology transfer under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.
Meanwhile, Menicon’s President & CEO Koji Kawaura highlighted that the plant’s role in meeting surging global demand, supplying key markets including Japan, Germany and the US, and strengthening Malaysia’s export earnings.
The facility currently employs 150 staff, 93% Malaysians, and emphasises structured technical training, internships and hands-on exposure to smart manufacturing and advanced automation, supporting Malaysia’s talent development and high-precision medical device ambitions.
Beyond exports, the plant also supports import substitution and enhances supply chain resilience for critical medical consumables, reinforcing Malaysia’s growing footprint in the global ophthalmic value chain.
