The Education Ministry (MOE) has granted school administrators the flexibility to manage student and staff welfare amid rising temperatures, including allowing the wearing of sports attire instead of official school uniforms.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the move is aimed at safeguarding the health and safety of students, teachers and school staff, particularly in northern states experiencing intense heat.
“School administrators have leeway to make decisions on activities and attire depending on the weather, as long as they follow guidelines from Malaysian Meteorological Department and the Health Ministry,” she added.
She shared that the guidelines cover clothing adjustments and the management of physical activities, giving schools discretion to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment while responding proactively to unexpected weather changes.
“With these guidelines, we can handle the situation. There is no issue regarding wearing sports attire during hot weather,” she said.
At the same time, Fadhlina urged school authorities to remain vigilant and take measures to protect students’ welfare, reinforcing that flexibility in uniforms and school activities is part of a broader effort to prioritise health and safety.
