Travellers to Melbourne Airport (MEL) are advised to plan as the Tullamarine Freeway will be closed overnight from Feb 17 to 20, 2026, to facilitate the installation of new overhead road signage for the airport’s upgraded Pick Up and Drop Off zones.
The closures are scheduled as follows:
- Feb 17, 10 pm– Feb 18, 5 am: Full closure in both directions between Mickleham and Sunbury roads. Detours will be available via Sharps Road and Airport Drive.
- Feb 19, 9 pm – Feb 20, 5 am: Airport-bound closure at the Mickleham Road bridge, with detours via the Mickleham Road on- and off-ramps.
Temporary lane reductions and speed limits will be enforced near the airport before, during, and after the works, with directional signage in place to guide drivers.
Airport authorities advise travellers to allow at least 20 extra minutes for their journey to MEL during this period.
Arriving three hours before the scheduled departure is strongly recommended.
Check-in counters close one hour before departure, and passengers are encouraged to complete self-check-in via the AirAsia MOVE app, available from 10 days up to one hour before flights to or from Australia.
The upgrades form part of Melbourne Airport’s ongoing effort to streamline traffic flow and enhance passenger experience at the Pick Up and Drop Off zones.
