Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has informed that its wholly-owned subsidiary, TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco), of winning operational extensions for three key power plants in Peninsular Malaysia.
The Energy Commission issued three Letters of Notification confirming TNB Genco as the successful bidder under the competitive “New Generation Capacity 2025–2029” (Category 1) tender. The win will ensure a combined 1,262MW of power remains available to the national grid during a period of surging demand.
The extensions cover three strategic gas-fired facilities across the peninsula, being the Gelugor, Putrajaya and Tuanku Ja’afar till 31 December 2029.
These facilities play a vital role in providing “baseload” power—the minimum amount of electric power that must be supplied to the electrical grid at any given time.
The EC’s decision to extend these existing facilities comes as Malaysia faces a looming supply-demand gap. The massive influx of AI data centers in Johor and the Klang Valley has accelerated electricity demand beyond previous forecasts.
By extending these brownfield assets (Category 1), the government can maintain a healthy reserve margin—the extra capacity available to meet peak demand—without the long lead times required to build entirely new plants from scratch.
TNB stated that the extensions are expected to be earnings accretive, meaning they will contribute positively to the Group’s bottom line starting from their respective Commercial Operation Dates (COD).
