Cape Town’s Mount Nelson Hotel Gets A Fashion Makeover

Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel in Cape Town, has launched a major collaboration with South African fashion designer Thebe Magugu to mark the tenth anniversary of his fashion house. The result is the two-storey Thebe Magugu Suite, an Afro-modernist retreat along Palm Avenue that blends African heritage with English elegance.

Next door, Magugu House Cape Town opens as a concept store and cultural space, showcasing fashion, art, and creative exchange.

Inside the Suite

Designed with StudioLandt, the suite is built around gathering, dining, and relaxing. The lower floor has a lounge and dining area with a wet bar, sculptural furniture, and a pendant inspired by the Basotho hat.

A palette of greens, indigos, and ochres sits against terrazzo floors and timber finishes for a warm, grounded feel. Upstairs, the king-size bedroom opens onto a balcony with Lion’s Head views, and the marble bathroom features a freestanding tub with aged brass fittings.

Art and Personal Touches

Art is central to the suite. Rotating works curated by Magugu and Contemporary African Art Specialist Julia Buchanan bring South African creativity to life.

Guests also find bespoke details: a gown and slippers, Rituals by Thebe Magugu bath products, Basotho fabric pouches, and custom teas created with Mount Nelson’s Tea Sommelier, Craig Cupido.

The blends mix familiar flavours like vanilla with indigenous herbs, offering a taste of South African stories.

Magugu House: Fashion Meets Culture

Magugu House, Cape Town, is more than a store. It displays limited-edition fashion, archival pieces, photography, books, and art, with quarterly exhibitions by South African creatives.

Its first show, By Our Own Hands, runs until the end of April, featuring Zanele Muholi, Zizipho Poswa, and Magugu himself.

The exhibition explores fashion as ritual and creative expression. Monthly events, including film screenings like Sonder and salon-style talks, make the space a hub for both local and international audiences.

Thoughtful Luxury in Cape Town

This project builds on Mount Nelson’s Pan-African fashion initiative, Confections x Collections, turning runway showcases into permanent experiences.

General Manager Patrick Fisher says the suite and Magugu House reflect the hotel’s approach to luxury: considered, local, and meaningful.

Guests can host small gatherings, enjoy the terrace, or explore Cape Town’s cultural scene at Southern Guild, Norval Foundation, and Zeitz MOCAA. The hotel concierge offers personalised options, from private training sessions to dining at the new Amura by Ángel León restaurant.

The Thebe Magugu Suite is open for bookings via [email protected]. Magugu House, Cape Town, welcomes visitors Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–18:00.
