Malaysia expects to see clear progress in its artificial intelligence (AI) standards framework within the next 12 months as part of efforts to position the country as an “AI Nation” by 2030.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the framework will ensure AI technologies used in Malaysia are safe, ethical and aligned with existing laws as adoption grows across sectors.
The framework will cover three key components — standards development, regulation and compliance, and legislation and enforcement.
Gobind said the first phase will focus on developing sector-specific AI standards with input from industry experts, before moving to regulatory and legislative aspects.
“This will take time, but the start is today. By 2030, we hope to see institutions built for that purpose,” he said.
The My-AI Standards platform serves as a one-stop digital hub for learning, collaboration and implementation of AI standards in Malaysia.
Developed by CyberSecurity Malaysia, the platform is supported by the National AI Office (NAIO), Malaysian Standards Department and SIRIM Bhd.
Gobind said Malaysia is also reviewing AI standards adopted by other countries, particularly within ASEAN, to ensure compatibility with global frameworks such as those set by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).
The initiative supports the Malaysia AI Action Plan 2026–2030, which aims to accelerate AI adoption, develop national talent and strengthen responsible AI governance.
