The Executive Director of the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), Dato’ Ir. Ts. Razib Dawood, briefed the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) to ASEAN during the 3rd CPR Meeting of 2026 on the impact of the Middle East situation on ASEAN’s energy sector.
The meeting, chaired by H.E. Evangeline T. Ong Jimenez-Ducrocq, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ASEAN, was attended by representatives from all ASEAN Member States and H.E. Nararya S. Soeprapto, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Community and Corporate Affairs.
Razib highlighted that more than half of ASEAN’s total final energy consumption and about one-third of regional power generation depend on oil and gas. He also shared discussions from the Ad-hoc Senior Official Meeting on Energy (SOME) held on March 16, 2026.
ACE has developed the region’s only ASEAN-led energy system model, with baseline data verified by Member States, used in the ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO) to forecast potential impacts of global developments on the region’s energy sector. SOME has tasked ACE to continue providing recommendations to Member States based on these analyses.
Razib said, “ACE acknowledged the role of energy to the regional economy and stability. Amid the current situation in the Middle East, we have been coordinating with the relevant energy stakeholders and the ASEAN energy bodies to provide support towards our shared energy security.
“Through this coordination with the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) to ASEAN, ACE reaffirmed our commitment to continue the work to safeguard the region’s energy security.”
Moving forward, ACE will continue to monitor developments in the Middle East and support ASEAN Member States in strengthening regional preparedness and energy security amid the ongoing global crisis.
