Malaysia Removes 43,618 Scam Posts In Just Three Months

More than 43,618 scam-related social media contents were removed in the first quarter of 2026 following requests from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), highlighting a sharp rise in enforcement against online fraud.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the removals were carried out by social media platform providers in compliance with takedown requests issued by MCMC, as reported by Bernama.

She said, “The removal of content was done following requests from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and was complied with by platform providers.”

She added that the trend of scam-related content being taken down has been increasing sharply each year, signalling growing concerns over online fraud activity.

Teo added, “Statistics show that the rate of removal of scam-related content has increased significantly every year.”

In 2023, platforms removed 6,297 scam-related contents. The figure jumped to 63,652 in 2024 before surging further to 98,503 in 2025, showing a rapid escalation in detected and removed fraudulent content.

“In 2023, 6,297 scam-related contents were requested to be taken down and were removed by platform providers. However, we saw the number rise sharply in 2024 to 63,652 and in 2025 to 98,503,” Teo said.

The trend is worrying and stresses the need for continued collaboration between regulators, media and platform providers to improve digital literacy and public awareness.
