Egg Prices Jump 7.3% As Cost Pressures Build

Prices of selected food items in Malaysia remained broadly stable between April 20 and 22, with movements largely contained within a 10% range, according to the Economy Ministry.

However, Minister of Economy YB Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said, underlying trends point to early signals of cost pressures emerging within the domestic food supply chain, particularly from input and logistics costs.

Average prices for key staples showed mixed movement. Standard chicken rose 3.3% to RM9.70 per kilogram, while Grade C eggs climbed 7.3% to RM3.93 per tray of 10. Beef prices, however, declined 3.8% to RM35.92 per kilogram.

Seafood prices were similarly mixed, with mackerel falling 1.1% to RM16.10 per kilogram, while scad fish and white prawns edged up slightly. In the vegetable segment, prices for mustard greens, spinach and fresh coconut milk all recorded moderate increases.

The ministry said while price movements remain manageable for now, the trend reflects early transmission of higher input and logistics costs into the food supply chain, warranting close monitoring in the coming weeks.
