Online Fraud Losses Hit RM2.8 Billion, 68,000 Cases Recorded

Malaysia recorded nearly 68,000 online fraud cases last year, with losses exceeding RM2.8 billion, highlighting the growing risks faced by consumers in an increasingly digital economy.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the figures reflect how digitalisation, while offering convenience, has also enabled more sophisticated scams targeting the public.

He said vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly, remain among the most affected, as fraudsters exploit gaps in digital awareness and literacy.

Ahmad Zahid said the National Consumer Policy 2.0 will strengthen protections against digital risks, including fraud, data exploitation and market manipulation, as part of broader efforts to restore trust in the online ecosystem.
