Royalton, Petronas Collaborate On New Underwater Epoxy Technology

Royalton Coating Systems has partnered with PETRONAS Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd to validate a graphene-enhanced underwater epoxy coating to improve corrosion protection for marine and industrial infrastructure.

The collaboration will see Royalton enhance its ROYALPOXY UW 410 underwater epoxy system with ProShield+™, a graphene additive technology developed and owned by PETRONAS.

The coating system is being tested for use in harsh environments such as offshore platforms, pipelines, jetty structures and vessels, where prolonged exposure to seawater, humidity and chemicals accelerates corrosion.

According to Royalton, the graphene integration is expected to improve barrier protection by reducing the penetration of water, oxygen and salt, while also strengthening durability, adhesion and resistance to micro-cracking under long-term immersion conditions.

ROYALPOXY UW 410 is designed for application on wet, oily and submerged surfaces, allowing maintenance work to be carried out without removing structures from service in certain cases. This is intended to reduce downtime for operators in marine and offshore environments.

The companies said the collaboration supports efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s industrial innovation capabilities in sectors linked to energy infrastructure, ports and heavy industry.

Royalton said the system is also being evaluated for broader use in infrastructure and industrial settings where corrosion control and maintenance efficiency remain operational priorities.
