Big luxury SUVs are usually about presence first and efficiency second. The new Mercedes-Benz GLE 400 e 4MATIC, however, is capable of delivering both, and after spending time behind the wheel, I can confidently say it succeeds more often than not.
The first thing I noticed was just how imposing this SUV looks on the road. With its AMG Line styling, massive 21-inch wheels, illuminated side steps and wide stance, this GLE has serious visual muscle.
In traffic, it commands attention without trying too hard. The diamond grille, Multibeam LED headlamps and subtle chrome detailing give it the kind of understated confidence Mercedes-Benz does well.
But the real surprise came once I started driving it.
Plug-in Hybrid Power with Real Electric Range
For a vehicle weighing well over 2.6 tonnes, the GLE 400 e feels remarkably refined and unintimidating. Visibility is excellent thanks to the high seating position, while the 360-degree camera and Active Parking Assist make navigating tight urban parking spaces far less stressful than expected.

The plug-in hybrid setup combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing a combined 280kW and 650Nm of torque. Put your foot down and this SUV moves with authority, completing the century sprint in just 6.1 seconds. More impressive, however, is how seamlessly the petrol and electric systems work together.
Most of the time, I found myself driving silently in “Electric” mode. In Electric mode, the GLE moves quietly through city traffic, and with up to 114km of WLTP-rated electric range, most daily routines can be completed without fuel consumption. Office commute, coffee runs, dinner meetings — this GLE handled all of it quietly and efficiently.
Switching between driving modes noticeably changes the SUV’s character. The “Hybrid” mode intelligently balances petrol and electric power for efficiency, while the “Sport” mode sharpens throttle response and gives the GLE a much more aggressive personality. The “Battery Hold” mode, meanwhile, preserves charge for later use, which proved useful before entering congested city areas. There is even an “Off-Road” mode that allows electric driving on rough terrain, a rare feature in a luxury plug-in hybrid SUV.
Adaptive Comfort and Tech-Laden Cabin
What stood out most during long drives was the AIRMATIC intelligent comfort suspension. As Malaysian roads are rarely forgiving, yet the GLE consistently absorbed uneven surfaces, expansion joints and potholes with impressive composure. The suspension continuously adapts to speed, road conditions and load, and the result is a ride quality that feels properly premium.
Yes, there is still some body roll if pushed too hard into corners — physics ultimately wins in a tall SUV — but this GLE never feels clumsy. Instead, it encourages a calmer, smoother driving style.
Inside, the cabin strikes a good balance between luxury and usability. The twin 12.3-inch displays running the latest MBUX system are responsive and intuitive, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto worked flawlessly throughout my drive.
The Burmester 3D surround sound system deserves special mention. With Dolby Atmos integration and 590 watts of output, it transforms the cabin into a rolling concert hall. Whether it was jazz, podcasts or late-night playlists, the audio clarity was exceptional.
Rear passengers are treated just as well. There is generous legroom, electrically adjustable rear seats and retractable sun blinds for added comfort. The panoramic sunroof also makes the cabin feel airy despite the SUV’s massive dimensions.
Practicality Without Compromise
Practicality hasn’t been overlooked either. The boot expands from 490 litres to 1,645 litres with the rear seats folded flat, making the GLE equally capable of handling grocery runs, airport pickups or weekend road trips.
My only real complaint? Ventilated seats are missing. In Malaysia’s heat, cooled seats would have elevated the ownership experience significantly.
Still, the bigger story here is how complete the package feels. The GLE 400 e is fast, comfortable, technologically advanced and surprisingly fuel-efficient for something this large. More importantly, it removes much of the compromise traditionally associated with electrified luxury vehicles.
You get the silence and efficiency of an EV for daily driving, combined with the reassurance of a petrol engine for long-distance travel. No charging anxiety. No dramatic lifestyle adjustment. Just effortless luxury with a smarter drivetrain.
And in today’s market, that balance feels increasingly hard to beat.
