Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants the economic benefits generated by the Formula One (F1) race at the Sepang International Circuit to be shared more widely, with small retailers and hawkers encouraged to participate alongside established businesses.
He said the government wants visitors attending the race to experience Malaysia’s diverse food culture through local hawkers and small traders, allowing them to enjoy authentic Malaysian cuisine while creating additional income opportunities for micro and small businesses.
Anwar stressed that hawkers and petty traders form the backbone of the country’s grassroots economy and should be included in initiatives that promote tourism and major sporting events.
The Prime Minister said integrating local vendors into high-profile international events would not only help generate higher sales but also showcase Malaysia’s culinary heritage and entrepreneurial spirit to foreign visitors.
He added that government agencies and event organisers should work together to create more avenues for small businesses to participate in such events, ensuring that economic gains are distributed more inclusively.
Malaysia is scheduled to host the Bahrain Grand Prix Formula One race at the Sepang International Circuit this October an event expected to attract thousands of local and international spectators while providing a boost to tourism, hospitality and related industries.
