The locally assembled MG S5 EV (S5 EV CKD) enters Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) market with a clear value proposition: More performance, more features and a lower price than its fully imported predecessor.
With a price tag starting from RM116,900 for the sole Lux variant, it undercuts the completely built-up (CBU) model by close to RM10,000 while offering additional power and torque. On paper, that’s already compelling. In practice, it feels even more convincing once I get behind the wheel.
Stronger Rear-Wheel-Drive Performance
Built on MG’s dedicated rear-wheel-drive EV architecture, the S5 EV CKD produces 203 PS and 350Nm of torque, an increase of 34hp and 100Nm over the imported version.
That extra output is immediately noticeable as the car pulls harder off the line, feels more responsive in mid-range acceleration and delivers a more balanced driving character thanks to its rear-wheel-drive setup.
Despite the performance boost, the ride remains refined enough for daily commuting. The low-mounted 62 kWh LFP battery helps keep the centre of gravity down, and that translates into better cornering stability and less body roll around bends. It never feels overly sporty, but it does feel confident. Things to note here is that the S5 EV CKD is not a performance SUV in the traditional sense, but it does feel more engaging than most EVs in this segment.
Range Anxiety No More
The claimed WLTP range of 446 km also alleviates most range-anxiety concerns for urban drivers and even for occasional interstate trips.

When it is time to recharge, the 150kW DC fast charging capability can take the battery from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes, which is genuinely practical for real-world usage.
The ultra-thin horizontal battery layout also helps improve cabin space and lowers the centre of gravity, which explains the car’s planted feel on the road.
Overall Look: Clean, Modern And Subtly Distinctive
Dimensionally, nothing changes from the CBU model as it still measures 4,476 mm in length, 1,849 mm in width and 1,621 mm in height, with a 2,730 mm wheelbase.

Visually, the S5 EV looks modern without trying too hard. The ‘Racing Flag’ daytime running lights and MG’s arch-shaped tail lamps give it enough identity to stand out, while the proportions feel clean and well-balanced. Features like the active grille system, kick-sensor powered tailgate and 18-inch Bridgestone Turanza wheels add to the premium feel.
Inside, MG has focused on practicality and comfort rather than unnecessary complexity.
The CKD version upgrades to full leatherette upholstery, powered and ventilated front seats, and a more refined cabin feel overall. The ventilated seats are particularly useful in Malaysia’s heat, while the panoramic sunroof helps the cabin feel airy.
The Lux variant also adds a power-adjustable front passenger seat and a hands-free tailgate.
The tech experience is mostly solid. The 12.8-inch infotainment display is responsive, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto worked seamlessly throughout my drive.
I also appreciated practical touches like the wireless charger, 360-degree camera, multiple USB-C ports and the large 453-litre boot space that is expandable to 1,441 litres. It is a well-rounded cabin that prioritises usability over gimmicks.
Smart Features: Where MG Gets Surprisingly Forward-Thinking
One of the most interesting features I experienced was the vehicle’s intelligent start-up function. Instead of pressing a start button, the car automatically powers itself the moment the sensor near the steering wheel detects the driver is seated inside.
Shutting the vehicle down is equally effortless by simply pressing the lock button on the key after exiting. It sounds minor, but after using it for a few days, it becomes surprisingly addictive.
It is a small change, but it streamlines the daily driving routine more than expected.
However, there is a catch: Many central system settings reset unless you download the MG iSMART and link it to the vehicle. Without it, the system feels less personalised over time as some functions need to be set to your preference, which is something owners will need to factor in.
Driver Monitoring And ADAS 2.5 Safety Suite
Nevertheless, MG also deserves credit for integrating driver monitoring technology that feels relevant rather than intrusive. The driver fatigue monitoring and driver distraction monitoring systems constantly observe attentiveness levels and provide alerts when necessary.

Combined with the ADAS 2.5 suite, featuring adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, autonomous emergency braking and lane keeping assist, the S5 EV delivers a reassuringly comprehensive layer of active safety.
Add in seven airbags, and the overall safety package feels well-rounded and competitive for this segment.
Final verdict: A value EV that doesn’t feel stripped down
Overall, the S5 EV CKD is not trying to reinvent the electric SUV formula. Instead, it refines it with stronger rear-wheel-drive performance, practical range, fast charging capability and a feature list that feels generous for its price.
There are minor ecosystem dependencies, particularly around the iSMART app, but they do not overshadow the overall package.
At a starting price of RM116,900, this is an EV that delivers more than just affordability; it delivers substance.
