Malaysia is preparing to roll out a redesigned International Passport (PMA) from June 1, 2026, and while the update includes a new look, the bigger shift is behind the cover. Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia, formally known as Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia, leads this initiative to strengthen the integrity of one of Malaysia’s most important travel documents.
A Major Upgrade in Security Features
The new Malaysian passport introduces 94 security features, up from 49 in the previous version.
This significant increase is designed to make the document far more difficult to forge or tamper with.
Enhanced Anti-Forgery Technology
The passport now includes multiple advanced security layers, such as:
- New-generation holograms
- Ultraviolet (UV) printing elements
- Hidden visual features only visible under specific conditions
- Special forensic-grade security elements that are extremely difficult to replicate
Secure Passport Booklet Construction
Additional physical security improvements include:
- Security-enhanced stitching thread embedded within the passport booklet
- Reinforced structural design to improve durability and authenticity verification
Stronger Identity Protection Against Counterfeiting
According to the Malaysian Immigration Department, the upgrades aim to make the passport:
- Harder to counterfeit
- Easier to verify at border control
- More resilient against document fraud and identity misuse
Gradual Rollout Before Nationwide Availability
Issuance of the new passport begins June 1, 2026 at selected locations:
- Immigration Headquarters, Putrajaya
- Passport Office, Kuala Lumpur (Jalan Duta)
- UTC Wangsa Maju
- Immigration Office, Shah Alam
Full nationwide rollout is expected by July 2026.
Passport Regulations
Applications for the new passport can be submitted online via Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia
Processing will depend on appointment capacity at selected offices.
Strict Rules on Photograph Submission
Applicants must submit authentic, unedited photographs only:
- AI-generated or digitally altered images are not allowed
- Immigration officers are trained to detect manipulated images
- Non-compliant submissions may be rejected
No Immediate Need to Replace Existing Passports
Current passports remain valid:
- No urgent replacement required
- Existing passports with more than six months’ validity can still be used
- Replacement should be done only upon expiry
According to Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia, the aim is straightforward: to strengthen the passport’s security and make it significantly harder to forge. The upgrade also intends to maintain international trust in Malaysian travel documents and support smoother border processing.
