Malaysia’s “Colony” Craze Pushes Film Past RM3.3 Million

Malaysian cinemas are seeing a clear winner at the box office right now. Colony, the latest Korean zombie thriller from Yeon Sang-ho, has pulled in around RM3.3 million locally, according to GSC Cinemas.

Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, known internationally for Train to Busan, the film continues his exploration of outbreak-driven narratives. Colony presents a virus scenario spreading rapidly across South Korea, with the storyline centring on survival amid a fast-unfolding crisis and the absence of a cure.

The film features a high-profile ensemble cast, including Gianna Jun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been, Kim Shin-rock and Go Soo. Their performances have been positioned as a key draw for audiences, combining established screen names with a genre that remains popular in the region.

In Malaysia, Colony has also benefited from premium format screenings, with audiences able to experience the film in 4DX and ScreenX formats.

Cinema operators have described the response as particularly strong among local moviegoers, with social media activity reflecting sustained interest since release. The performance adds to the continued demand for Korean genre films in Southeast Asia, especially those blending large-scale production with high-intensity storytelling.
