AirAsia has denied reports alleging that its Philippine unit, Philippines AirAsia, is facing a grounding of operations, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement on Thursday, the airline said all flights operated by Philippines AirAsia, which uses the flight code Z2, remain fully operational and continue to run as scheduled, subject only to normal operational factors such as weather conditions.
AirAsia said the reports were part of what it described as a coordinated smear campaign aimed at undermining competition in the Philippine aviation sector. The airline argued that such narratives could reduce consumer choice and potentially create conditions that favour monopolistic market structures, resulting in higher airfares and fewer options for travellers.
Co-founder and adviser Tony Fernandes said AirAsia remains committed to affordable travel and has no intention of reducing its presence in the Philippines, where it carries almost seven million passengers annually.
He added that the group is investing in the development of airport infrastructure, including at Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Mactan-Cebu International Airport, to improve connectivity, enhance operational efficiency and lower costs.
Fernandes also said the airline plans to deploy more aircraft to its Philippine operations as it expands its fleet and aircraft order book, supporting network growth and more competitive fares.
AirAsia said Philippines AirAsia remains focused on supporting tourism, economic growth and providing safe, affordable and reliable air travel across the country.
The statement comes amid speculation over the future of the airline’s operations in the Philippines, which AirAsia insists has no basis in fact.
