The Perak Forestry Department will review its hiking standard operating procedures (SOPs), including the introduction of cut-off times for entry into forest areas, as part of efforts to strengthen hiker safety.
Perak Forestry Director Datuk Mohd Basri Abdul Manaf said the review would cover safety measures, carrying capacity and the suitability of hiking trails across the state.
He said although the existing SOPs remain relevant, improvements are needed in line with the rising popularity of hiking activities.
“We will reassess all aspects of the SOP, including proposed enhancements such as cut-off entry times and other safety elements,” he said.
Separately, the department has temporarily closed the Gunung Batu Putih hiking trail in Tapah to facilitate search and rescue (SAR) operations for missing hiker Jaslinda Saludin and to allow for a safety assessment of the area.
Mohd Basri said such closures typically last between three and six months, depending on site conditions, SAR operations and any upgrading works required before reopening.
