Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) and Health Ministry (MOH) to urgently finalise a solution to the recognition issue involving the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programme.
In a statement today, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said it has taken note of complaints raised by Malaysian pharmacy students at Alexandria University, Egypt, regarding the matter.
The PMO said the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) has no objection to the academic recognition of the programme.
However, it noted that professional recognition for registration as a pharmacist requires consideration and approval from the Malaysian Pharmacy Board.
The issue has left at least four Malaysian students in Egypt facing uncertainty over mandatory examinations, practical training requirements and their ability to pursue a career as pharmacists in Malaysia.
The PMO stressed that MOHE and MOH must resolve the matter comprehensively in line with the framework, which emphasises justice, compassion and wisdom in decisions affecting the future of the people.
“The matter must be resolved immediately in the interest of the students, without compromising the professional standards required in the pharmacy profession,” the statement said.
