Malaysia Poised To Tap World’s Largest Gas Reserves Through Petronas-Turkminestan Talks, PM

Malaysia is on the verge of gaining access to one of the world’s largest natural gas reserves through ongoing discussions between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and the Turkmenistan government, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

Anwar described the development as a significant milestone that could strengthen Malaysia’s long-term energy security while creating new growth opportunities for Petronas in the global energy sector.

According to the Prime Minister, Turkmenistan possesses some of the world’s largest natural gas reserves, and ongoing engagements between Petronas and the Central Asian nation have opened the door for deeper cooperation in the upstream oil and gas industry.

Malaysia is now at the cusp of obtaining access to one of the world’s largest sources of natural gas through discussions involving Petronas and Turkmenistan.

He noted that the potential collaboration reflects growing bilateral ties between the two countries and demonstrates international confidence in Petronas’ expertise as a global energy company.

Turkmenistan is home to the massive Galkynysh gas field, which ranks among the largest natural gas fields in the world and is regarded as a strategic energy asset with significant potential to support growing global demand for cleaner fuel sources.

The discussions could pave the way for Malaysian participation in exploration, development and production activities, while also enhancing energy cooperation between Southeast Asia and Central Asia.

The Prime Minister added that expanding Petronas’ international footprint remains a key priority as Malaysia seeks to strengthen its position in the global energy landscape amid increasing competition for energy resources and the ongoing transition towards lower-carbon fuels.
