Hajiji Urges Calm As Sabah Monitors Tsunami Threat In East Coast Districts

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has advised residents in Tawau, Kunak, Semporna and Lahad Datu to remain calm and comply with instructions from authorities following a tsunami alert issued after a magnitude 7.9 earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines earlier today.

Datuk Seri Hajiji said District Disaster Management Committees in the affected areas have been activated immediately to ensure preparedness and coordinate response efforts as authorities monitor the situation closely, Bernama reported.

He stressed that public cooperation is crucial during the ongoing alert period, urging residents to stay calm and follow all directives issued by relevant agencies.

The state government, he added, is also closely monitoring developments through the State Disaster Operations Control Centre to ensure timely updates and coordinated action if needed.

Earlier, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a notice warning that tsunami waves of up to 0.4 metres could reach coastal areas in the four districts between 10.30am and 12pm today following the offshore earthquake.

Authorities continue to assess the situation as precautionary measures remain in place across Sabah’s east coast districts.
