The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila, is closely monitoring the aftermath of a powerful magnitude 7.9 earthquake that struck off the coast of Mindanao, Philippines, at 7.37 am on 8 June 2026.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) has also issued updates on localised tsunami advisories affecting coastal areas in Sabah following the seismic event.
According to Wisma Putra, the Malaysian Embassy in Manila is actively coordinating with local authorities in the Philippines to assess the safety and well-being of Malaysians in the affected regions.
At this early stage, no reports of Malaysian nationals being affected by the earthquake have been received.
Malaysians currently in or travelling to affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant, move to higher ground if near coastal zones, and comply strictly with evacuation orders and safety instructions issued by Philippine authorities.
The ministry also advised Malaysians to register and update their details via the e-Konsular portal to ensure timely consular assistance if required.
Wisma Putra said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as verified information becomes available.
