PM Warns Visa Abuse Could Hurt Local Job Opportunities

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has raised concerns over the growing number of foreigners misusing tourist and student visas to operate businesses in Malaysia, warning that the practice could affect job and business opportunities for locals.

He said the government is aware of cases involving foreign nationals entering the country on visitor or student visas before engaging in business activities, including within the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector.

According to Anwar, such practices could have an adverse impact on employment opportunities for Malaysians and create unfair competition for local businesses.

“Many also arrive from China on tourist visas but go on to operate small businesses, such as vehicle repair workshops, air-conditioning services, small companies and coffee shops,” he said.

He also said the issue warrants close attention as it involves compliance with immigration regulations and the protection of economic opportunities for Malaysians.
