PETRONAS Strengthens Japan Presence Through 20-Year LNG Contract With JERA

PETRONAS has signed a new long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement with Japan’s JERA, extending one of Asia’s longest-standing energy partnerships into the 2040s.

Under the agreement, PETRONAS, through its wholly owned subsidiary PETRONAS LNG Ltd., will supply up to approximately two million tonnes per annum of LNG over a 20-year period beginning in 2028.

The deal reinforces PETRONAS’ position as a key LNG supplier to Japan, one of the world’s largest LNG importers, while supporting the country’s long-term energy security needs.

The partnership dates back to 1983 when Malaysia delivered its first LNG cargo to Japan. The latest agreement reflects a shift from traditional point-to-point LNG contracts towards a more flexible supply arrangement as demand patterns evolve.

LNG cargoes under the new agreement will be transported using PETRONAS’ new generation 174,000-cubic-metre LNG carriers, which are designed to meet enhanced emissions standards set by the International Maritime Organization.

PETRONAS Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Gas and Maritime Business, Datuk Adif Zulkifli, said the agreement builds on decades of trust and reliability between both companies and supports Japan’s evolving energy requirements.

The agreement was commemorated in Tokyo and attended by representatives from both companies, including JERA Senior Managing Executive Officer and Chief Low Carbon Fuel Officer, Ryosuke Tsugaru.

The latest contract comes as Asian demand for cleaner energy sources continues to grow, with PETRONAS positioning LNG as a key component in supporting customers’ energy security and lower-carbon transition goals.
