No Tsunami Threat After Moderate Quake Strikes Indonesia

A moderate magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck north of the Maluku Sea in Indonesia early June 13 at 3:33am local time, with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) confirming there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia or surrounding regions.

According to MetMalaysia, the quake was recorded at a depth of 112km, with its epicentre located at 3.0°N and 127.9°E, about 193km southeast of Pulau Talaud, Indonesia.

“Seismic data indicated a deep-focus event, which typically reduces the likelihood of tsunami formation.

“Regional monitoring agencies continue to track aftershocks, but no damage or casualties have been reported so far,” MetMalaysia said, emphasising that the tremor poses no tsunami risk to Malaysia.
