US President Donald Trump drew attention at the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France after telling fellow leaders “I’m the boss” as discussions shifted towards Ukraine’s war position and a preliminary US-Iran peace deal.
The comment came during a gathering of Group of Seven leaders who jointly signalled stronger support for Ukraine, alongside fresh sanctions against Russia. The summit also reflected a notable shift in tone from Washington, with Trump appearing more aligned with Kyiv’s position compared to earlier scepticism.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and allies used the meeting to highlight what they described as improving battlefield momentum, arguing that Russia is in a weaker negotiating position for any potential peace talks.
Trump, speaking separately at the summit, described Russia as the “offensive” party in the conflict and said Moscow was losing more soldiers than Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron said there had been a clear change in Trump’s approach to the war, while other European leaders echoed similar views.
On Iran, G7 leaders welcomed a preliminary peace agreement between the United States and Tehran but stopped short of defining their role in implementation. Trump, however, stressed the deal was not final and warned that military action could resume if it was not upheld.
“If I don’t like it, if they don’t behave, we’ll go right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head, OK?” he said.
Leaders also agreed to strengthen coordination on critical minerals, including efforts to reduce dependence on China and improve stockpiling strategies through expanded cooperation with the International Energy Agency.
The summit additionally included discussions on artificial intelligence with tech executives present, focusing on regulation, accountability and the risks of misinformation generated by AI systems.
Despite differing views on key geopolitical issues, the summit concluded with a unified call for a ceasefire in Lebanon and continued coordination on global security and energy resilience.
