Parliament Returns Monday With Reform, Cybercrime Bills In Focus

Parliament will reconvene on Monday with several key reform and regulatory bills set to take centre stage, alongside debates on energy security and economic challenges facing Malaysia.

The 16-day Dewan Rakyat sitting, which runs until July 16, will see the re-tabling of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years, as well as the Constitution (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2026 to separate the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor.

Lawmakers are also expected to debate the Cyber Crime Bill 2026, a closely watched piece of legislation as Malaysia pushes ahead with its digital economy ambitions and efforts to strengthen cybersecurity governance.

Another key item is the proposed amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987, which seek tougher action against illegal street racing, curb “tonto” activities and strengthen enforcement measures to improve road safety.

Beyond legislation, attention is expected to turn to the potential impact of global energy supply disruptions stemming from ongoing tensions in West Asia, amid concerns over their implications for fuel prices, inflation and broader economic activity.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul has called on MPs to maintain high-quality debates focused on issues affecting the rakyat and the economy, while avoiding the use of parliamentary proceedings for political campaigning during the Johor state election period.

The Dewan Negara will convene from July 20 to Aug 4.
