The Federal Government has expressed confidence in Sarawak’s ability to manage and operate Bintulu Port following its transfer from federal to state control, marking a major milestone in the state’s economic autonomy.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Sarawak possesses the expertise and experienced workforce needed to run the strategic port, which plays a crucial role in Malaysia’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry and regional trade.
“Sarawak today has the capability to manage and operate the port, with many experienced personnel in place,” he said.
Anwar said the handover reflected the strong ties and mutual trust between the Federal and Sarawak governments.
“The transfer of Bintulu Port by the Federal Government is also a sign of our confidence and friendship,” he added.
The transfer follows the Federal Government’s agreement to hand over the port to Sarawak for RM1.8 billion, as announced by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas on May 20.
On the oil and gas sector, Anwar called for closer collaboration between Petronas and Petros, stressing the need for both parties to work together while respecting federal and state laws.
He said discussions with Abang Johari have consistently focused on achieving a mutually beneficial outcome for both companies and the nation.
“We want a win-win outcome. There is a huge opportunity, and we want this resolved fairly and justly,” he said.
Anwar also expressed hope that negotiations between Petronas and Petros would be concluded soon, paving the way for stronger cooperation in developing Malaysia’s oil and gas industry.
