The economic impact of trade disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, improvements to Malaysia’s haj management system and safeguards against artificial intelligence (AI) abuse are among key issues set to dominate the opening day of Parliament today.
According to the Order Paper, Datuk Dr Richard Rapu @ Aman Begri (GPS-Betong) will ask the Economy Minister to assess the impact of disruptions in the strategic shipping route on local industrial operating costs and Malaysia’s inflation rate in the second quarter of 2026.
He will also seek details on contingency measures under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to sustain GDP growth should a prolonged global economic slowdown occur.
Onn Abu Bakar (PH-Batu Pahat) is expected to question the Prime Minister on plans to improve the haj management system for 2027, including issues related to costs, waiting periods, and the welfare and health protection of pilgrims.
Meanwhile, Wong Shu Qi (PH-Kluang) will ask the Digital Minister whether the proposed AI Governance Bill will specifically address abuses such as child sexual exploitation deepfakes, identity impersonation and the non-consensual distribution of intimate content.
Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin (PN-Putrajaya) is also set to raise concerns over the impact of the Middle East conflict on Malaysia’s food security and the government’s short-, medium- and long-term intervention plans.
Also scheduled for tabling are the Cyber Crime Bill 2026 and amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987.
The Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament will run for 16 days until July 16.
