Housing Ministry To Strengthen Monitoring Of Troubled Housing Projects

The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) will strengthen oversight of high-risk and troubled housing projects through enhancements to the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Act 1966 (Act 118), as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of rising construction costs.

Minister Nga Kor Ming said the improvements will enable earlier intervention in projects facing delays, helping ensure developments remain on schedule and reducing risks to homebuyers.

The ministry will also continue promoting productivity-enhancing construction technologies such as Industrialised Building System (IBS), Building Information Modelling (BIM) and other modern building methods to improve efficiency and lower reliance on labour.

Meanwhile, the Simen Rahmah Scheme has been expanded to cover affordable housing projects undertaken by federal and state governments as well as private developers, offering cement at below-market prices to help contain construction costs.

Nga said KPKT will also strengthen homeownership initiatives including the Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme (SJKP), Rent-to-Own (RTO) programme and other affordable housing schemes to support lower- and middle-income earners amid rising living costs.
