Curaçao enter their final group-stage match carrying the hopes of neutrals everywhere.
The Caribbean nation has already become one of the surprise packages of the tournament, earning widespread admiration after holding Ecuador to a goalless draw. Goalkeeper Eloy Room was the hero on that occasion, producing a record-equalling 15 saves as Curaçao defended with remarkable organisation and discipline.
That result has left Dick Advocaat’s side in a fascinating position. Depending on the outcome of Germany’s clash against Ecuador, a draw could potentially be enough to send Curaçao into the knockout stages and complete one of the great World Cup stories.
Ivory Coast, however, have very different plans.
The Elephants arrive knowing qualification remains within reach but are still recovering from the disappointment of surrendering a lead in their defeat to Germany. Emerse Fae’s side possess greater depth, physicality and attacking quality than Curaçao have faced so far, making this arguably the toughest challenge of the Caribbean side’s campaign.

Tactically, the contrast between both teams could shape the contest.
Curaçao are expected to remain compact and organised, defending in numbers and limiting space between the lines. Their game plan will likely revolve around frustrating Ivory Coast, slowing the tempo and creating opportunities through quick transitions. Leandro Bacuna’s experience and passing range will be vital in launching counter-attacks, while Room may once again be called upon to produce another inspired performance.
Ivory Coast, meanwhile, are expected to dominate possession and territory. The Elephants have the tools to stretch compact defensive blocks, particularly through the pace and directness of Amad Diallo. His ability to beat defenders one-on-one could force Curaçao’s defensive shape wider than they would like, creating openings for runners arriving from midfield.

That is where Franck Kessie becomes crucial. The experienced midfielder remains one of Ivory Coast’s most influential players, capable of controlling possession, winning duels and making late attacking runs into dangerous areas. If Curaçao spend long periods defending, Kessie’s presence could become increasingly important as the match progresses.
There is certainly a compelling argument for another World Cup shock. Curaçao have already demonstrated that organisation and belief can bridge the gap against more fancied opponents. With Room in inspired form and the pressure largely resting on Ivory Coast, the underdogs have every reason to believe they can make life uncomfortable once again.
Yet there is also a feeling that sustaining that level of defensive resistance for a second consecutive match may prove difficult. Unlike Ecuador, Ivory Coast possess greater physical presence in attacking areas and more direct routes to goal. Over 90 minutes, that pressure can become difficult to absorb.
Players to Watch
Curaçao: Eloy Room, Leandro Bacuna
Ivory Coast: Amad Diallo, Franck Kessie
Adrian’s Prediction
Curaçao 1-0 Ivory Coast
The romantic choice. Curaçao defend bravely, Room delivers another masterclass and a moment of quality on the counter-attack sends the Caribbean side into the knockout rounds in stunning fashion.
Rizal’s Prediction
Curaçao 0-2 Ivory Coast
The footballing logic choice. Curaçao remain organised and competitive for long periods, but Ivory Coast’s superior quality, depth and physicality eventually tell. A second-half breakthrough followed by a late goal secures qualification for the Elephants.
One prediction follows the heart. The other follows the tactical board. That’s what makes this fixture one of the most intriguing games of the final group-stage round.
