Keanu Reeves Could Help Build Lego’s Next Big Screen Comeback

Keanu Reeves may be heading back into the Lego universe — and this time, he could be taking centre stage.

According to Variety, Reeves is being lined up for the lead role in a new untitled Lego movie from Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley. The project would reunite the pair after Reeves memorably voiced the over-the-top stuntman Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4, a character that quickly became a fan favourite.

What makes this move interesting isn’t just the prospect of Reeves joining another major franchise. It’s the fact that Lego movies are at a crossroads.

The new film is reportedly being developed as a live-action and CG hybrid, though details remain scarce. It’s not yet known whether Reeves would appear on screen, lend his voice to an animated character, or do both. Plot details, additional casting and creative personnel have yet to be revealed.

Still, Reeves’ involvement immediately raises the profile of a franchise that has spent the last several years searching for its next chapter.

When The Lego Movie landed in 2014, it looked like an unlikely blockbuster. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film transformed a toy brand into a smart, self-aware cinematic hit and launched a billion-dollar franchise.

Spin-offs such as The Lego Batman Movie followed, but later entries, including The Lego Ninjago Movie and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, struggled to replicate that momentum.

The franchise’s future became even less certain after Warner Bros. allowed its Lego rights to lapse, opening the door for Universal to step in.

Universal secured the Lego film rights in 2020 and has since explored multiple projects with filmmakers, including Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins and Joe Cornish. None ultimately made it to production.

Industry reports suggest Universal is working against the clock to get a Lego film moving before its rights agreement reaches a critical point. In that context, attaching a globally recognisable star like Reeves and a filmmaker with Cooley’s animation pedigree looks less like a routine casting move and more like a serious attempt to put Lego movies back on the cultural map.

The studio’s most recent Lego-related feature, Piece by Piece — Pharrell Williams’ life story told through Lego animation — earned strong reviews but failed to make a major impact at the box office.

That leaves Universal searching for a breakout hit, and Reeves arrives with a track record of helping unconventional projects connect with audiences. Whether through action franchises, animated features or scene-stealing supporting roles, he has become one of Hollywood’s most reliable crowd-pleasers.

For now, the movie remains largely a mystery. But if Reeves officially signs on, Lego may have found its strongest building block yet.
