Malaysians aged 18 and above can apply for the new security-enhanced International Malaysian Passport with a validity of either five or 10 years from tomorrow, offering greater flexibility for frequent travellers.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the new 10-year passport costs RM350, allowing applicants to save RM50 compared to renewing a five-year passport twice over the same period. He said the longer validity period would provide added convenience for those travelling overseas regularly for work, business, studies or family commitments.
“Hopefully, this initiative not only eases public transactions but also further strengthens the standing of the Malaysian passport as a trusted and respected travel document on the international stage,” he said in a Facebook post.
The upgraded passport incorporates 94 security features, almost double the 49 found in the previous version. These include holograms, ultraviolet printing, latent images and other advanced security technologies designed to reduce the risk of forgery, alteration and misuse.
Saifuddin said the new passport will be introduced in stages at 71 passport offices nationwide beginning July.
He also assured Malaysians that there is no need to replace their existing passports immediately, as current passports will remain valid until they are close to their expiry date.
