A Bestselling Post-Apocalyptic Adventure Is Headed To Disney+

Fans of The Last Kids on Earth could soon see the monster-filled adventure in a new format. According to Deadline, Disney+ and Disney Channel have given a pilot order to a live-action adaptation of the popular animated series, expanding the franchise beyond its original animated run.

Based on the bestselling book series by Max Brallier, the story follows orphan Jack Sullivan and his group of friends as they navigate a world overrun by monsters and zombies. Together, the unlikely team transforms a treehouse into their headquarters while trying to survive—and ultimately save—the world.

The live-action project will be written by Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux, the duo behind Gotham Knights, who will also serve as executive producers and showrunners. Directing duties fall to Kevin Tancharoen, whose recent credits include The Book of Boba Fett and The Brothers Sun.

The franchise first reached television in 2019 with an animated special on Netflix before running for two additional seasons, ending in 2020. Its blend of action, comedy and coming-of-age storytelling helped build a fanbase beyond readers of the original books.

A pilot order doesn’t automatically guarantee a full series, but it marks the first major step towards bringing the post-apocalyptic world of The Last Kids on Earth into live action. For Disney, it also adds another established young adult property to its growing development slate, tapping into a title that already has recognition across books and animation.

With the creative team now in place, the next question is whether the series can capture the same mix of humour, adventure and monster-fighting chaos that made the original stories resonate with younger audiences.
