Switzerland booked their place in the Round of 16 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a controlled and efficient 2-0 victory over Algeria, extending their strong tournament run with a performance that required minimal fuss but maximum authority.
Breel Embolo set the tone early at BC Place Vancouver, breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute after Johan Manzambi drove into the box and cut the ball back from the byline for a simple finish from close range. The early strike immediately put Switzerland in control and forced Algeria onto the back foot.
Algeria, led by coach Vladimir Petkovic who ironically Switzerland’s former manager from 2014 to 2021, held firm until the break, with hopes of a tactical reset at halftime. But any plans for a comeback were swiftly dismantled within a minute of the restart.
Dan Ndoye doubled Switzerland’s advantage almost immediately after the interval, reacting quickest to Rafik Belghali’s half clearance inside the area before calmly slotting past Luca Zidane to effectively end the contest.
From there, Switzerland managed the game with composure and defensive discipline, limiting Algeria to very few clear chances and controlling the tempo as they comfortably saw out the result.
Coming into the match with just one defeat in their last 17 games, Switzerland once again demonstrated their consistency and tournament pedigree, securing a fourth consecutive Round of 16 appearance at the World Cup.
Switzerland will remain in Vancouver for their next challenge on July 7, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana as they look to continue their deep run in the competition.
