France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after Kylian Mbappe’s second-half penalty secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay at Philadelphia Stadium.
The win sets up a quarter-final clash with Morocco on 9 July in Boston after the Atlas Lions defeated co-hosts Canada earlier in the day.
Mbappe’s 69th-minute spot-kick was enough to separate the sides in a tightly contested encounter, taking his tournament tally to seven goals. The France captain is now level with Lionel Messi in the race for the 2026 adidas Golden Boot, edging ahead on assists, while moving within one goal of Messi’s all-time World Cup total of 20.
Paraguay, fresh from their penalty shootout victory over Germany in the Round of 16, adopted a disciplined defensive approach that frustrated France throughout the opening half.
Les Bleus controlled possession but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, with their efforts largely restricted to long-range attempts that failed to seriously test goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
France gradually increased the pressure after the break. Ousmane Dembele fired into the side netting following a quickly taken corner before Gill produced an impressive full-stretch save to deny Manu Kone’s powerful strike from distance.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 69th minute when Desire Doue was brought down inside the penalty area. After a VAR review confirmed the foul, Mbappe stepped up and calmly sent Gill the wrong way from the penalty spot to give France the decisive lead.
Paraguay were unable to mount a late response as France held firm to secure their place in the last eight, where they will face an in-form Morocco side seeking to build on another impressive World Cup campaign.
