GST, Diesel Subsidies And Banking Profits In Focus As Dewan Rakyat Sits Today

Tax reform, diesel subsidies, media freedom and the rising demand for water from data centres are among the key issues expected to dominate today’s Dewan Rakyat sitting, according to the Order Paper.

Among the most closely watched motions is one by Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong (Ayer Hitam), who will urge the government to begin preparations for reintroducing the Goods and Services Tax (GST). He argues that rising fuel subsidy costs and fiscal pressures require a broader structural tax reform while calling for critical ministries such as Health and Higher Education to be shielded from budget cuts.

Wee will also table another motion seeking an expansion of the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS 2.0) to include sectors currently excluded, such as tour buses, vegetable wholesalers using pick-up trucks, tourism vehicles and construction machinery. He is also proposing direct subsidies at fuel stations instead of the current reimbursement mechanism to ease cash flow pressures on SMEs.

Another motion from the Ayer Hitam MP calls for amendments to the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, including judicial oversight over asset freezing powers and placing the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) under Parliament’s supervision.

Several oral questions are also expected to draw attention. Dato’ Hajah Mumtaz Md Nawi (Tumpat) will ask about whether growing water demand from data centres could affect treated water reserves and domestic water tariffs.

Meanwhile, Tuan Hassan Abdul Karim (Pasir Gudang) is seeking an explanation for Malaysia’s decline in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index, while Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (Bandar Tun Razak) will ask about the government’s long-term strategy to ensure targeted subsidies do not worsen the cost of living.

Finance-related issues are also on the agenda, with Tuan Lim Guan Eng (Bagan) questioning banking sector profits and the absence of broader loan relief measures for micro, small and medium enterprises, while Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong is also seeking details on cancelled or postponed federal projects since 2018 and whether a Royal Commission of Inquiry will be established to examine the financial losses involved.
