Tax reform, constitutional amendments, human rights and urban infrastructure are among the major issues set to dominate today’s Dewan Rakyat sitting.
The government is scheduled to table several Bills for first reading, including the Control of Paddy and Rice (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Evidence (Amendment) Bill 2026 and the Sexual Offences Against Children (Amendment) Bill 2026.
Lawmakers will also continue debating the Constitution (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2026, which seeks to separate the roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor. The House is also expected to debate the report of the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on the constitutional amendments, alongside the Urban Renewal Bill 2025 and the Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill 2024.
A motion by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department will call on MPs to debate and take note of SUHAKAM’s 2024 Annual Report, covering issues involving workers’ rights, children, women, older persons, persons with disabilities and socio-economic rights while urging stronger implementation of its recommendations.
Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong (Ayer Hitam) is expected to push for preparations to reintroduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST), arguing that a broader tax base is needed to reduce fiscal pressure from rising fuel subsidies while protecting allocations for the Health and Higher Education ministries. He will also propose expanding the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS 2.0) to cover more sectors, seek amendments to the Anti-Money Laundering Act including parliamentary oversight of the MACC and call for a review of individual income tax reliefs.
Meanwhile, Dato’ Sri Dr. Wee Jeck Seng (Tanjung Piai) will table motions urging the government to tackle Kuala Lumpur’s recurring sinkholes and flash floods, address Malaysia’s brain drain through the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and strengthen national talent development in TVET, STEM, digital technology and artificial intelligence.
Today’s Dewan Rakyat sitting is scheduled to begin at 10am and continue until 5.30pm.
