Govt Denies Jho Low Entered Malaysia Last Year

Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong has denied allegations that fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, entered Malaysia last year with a Chinese delegation to negotiate a repayment package linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

“I deny the allegation,” Liew said during Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday in response to a supplementary question from Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (MUDA-Muar).

Syed Saddiq had earlier raised media reports alleging that Jho Low attended a secret meeting in Malaysia late last year involving discussions on a 1MDB repayment package with the Ministry of Finance.

The denial comes as the government continues efforts to recover funds and assets linked to 1MDB. As of 30 June 2026, the government has paid RM42.5 billion in 1MDB-related debts and commitments, including principal payments, interest, legal costs and other obligations.

The government remains responsible for RM8.9 billion in government-guaranteed Islamic Medium-Term Notes, bringing total 1MDB-related liabilities that have been and remain payable to RM51.4 billion.

To date, RM31.3 billion in funds linked to 1MDB have been recovered, while the government estimates it may still need to bear a net obligation of RM20.1 billion if no further recoveries are made.
