Anwar Pushes Border Ports To Spur Malaysia-Thailand Trade

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed the Transport Ministry to discuss expanding the use of ports along the Malaysia-Thailand border and in Penang to strengthen infrastructure development and logistics connectivity in the northern corridor.

Anwar said port development was among the key issues raised during discussions with his Thai counterpart, Anutin Charnvirakul, during the latter’s recent official visit to Malaysia.

Beyond the recently inaugurated transport route, both leaders also discussed enhancing rail connectivity and leveraging ports to support cross-border trade and economic growth, he said in Parliament.

Anwar added that the government is also looking at maximising the potential of emerging logistics hubs, including Sanglang Port and the Perlis Inland Port, to unlock greater economic spillovers from the border corridor while strengthening rail transport and tourism.

He stressed that border development must be complemented by better infrastructure, Technical and Vocational Education and Training, and greater business opportunities for Bumiputera entrepreneurs to ensure local communities benefit from economic growth.
