Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has moved to quell mounting political speculation by reaffirming that the Pakatan Harapan (PH)-Barisan Nasional (BN) Unity Government will remain intact until the conclusion of its current mandate, amid persistent rumours that Malaysia could head to the polls as early as next year.
In a statement, Anwar stressed that the coalition government remains united and committed to serving its full term, dismissing speculation of any imminent political realignment involving its key partners.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time when political chatter has intensified over the possibility of an early dissolution of Parliament ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16), with analysts and political observers pointing to a series of recent developments that have fuelled speculation.
Anwar reiterated that the partnership between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional remains solid, describing the coalition as essential to ensuring political stability and continuity in implementing reforms.
The comments comes after former Economic Minister Rafizi Ramli wrote on his social media post citing that not alls well at the Unity Government after Anwar told off Ministers to resign.
His remarks come amid recent public statements involving Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over whether ministers should step down following criticism directed at the federal government during the Negeri Sembilan state election campaign.
He claimed that Umno, Barisan Nasional, PAS and Perikatan Nasional were more focused on attempting to take over the federal government than addressing public concerns, while suggesting that if Umno continued backing Anwar’s administration, the unity government risked appearing disingenuous because of apparent differences between public support and private criticism.
Rafizi further alleged that some Umno ministers who had publicly praised the prime minister while serving in Cabinet were now openly critical, describing the situation as politically contradictory.
He acknowledged that Anwar and Pakatan Harapan would seek to preserve the unity government but argued that the current political tensions stemmed from the decision to include Umno in the administration, resulting in eight Umno ministers joining the Cabinet.
The Unity Government, formed following the hung Parliament produced by the 15th General Election in November 2022, also comprises Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and several other parties, commanding a comfortable majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
Malaysia’s next general election is not constitutionally due until early 2028, based on the five-year parliamentary term. However, Parliament may be dissolved earlier at the Prime Minister’s advice to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
