SGX Weekly Wrap: Banks, Industrials Lift STI To Another Record Close

Singapore stocks ended the week at another record high, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) climbing 1.41% over the five trading sessions to close at 5,588.34 on Friday, extending its winning streak to a seventh consecutive week.

The STI gained 78.90 points from the previous Friday’s close, supported by strength in banking stocks, industrial counters and selected real estate investment trusts, despite intermittent profit-taking and external uncertainties surrounding global tariffs and interest rates.

The week began on a subdued note as the STI slipped 10.48 points, or 0.20%, to 5,498.95 on Monday. Trading remained active with around 1.1 billion shares changing hands worth about S$1.7 billion, while advancers outpaced decliners. Mapletree Pan Asia Commercial Trust was among the day’s top gainers, whereas Hongkong Land led the losses.

Sentiment improved on Tuesday as the benchmark reclaimed the 5,500 level, with buying interest returning to blue-chip counters. The positive momentum continued into Wednesday, when the STI edged higher alongside firmer regional markets as investors remained optimistic over corporate earnings.

The rally paused on Thursday, with the benchmark easing 13.66 points, or 0.20%, to 5,581.76 despite gains across broader Asian markets. Yangzijiang Shipbuilding stood out among the session’s best-performing STI constituents.

Buying resumed on Friday, lifting the STI by 6.58 points, or 0.10%, to a fresh record close of 5,588.34. Seatrium was the top performer among index constituents after rising 1.4% to S$2.13, while UOL Group fell 3.1% to S$9.40 to become the session’s biggest laggard.

The benchmark has now advanced about 20.28% since the start of the year, underpinned by resilient corporate earnings and sustained support for heavyweight stocks even as investors continue to monitor developments in global trade policy and the interest rate outlook.

Trading activity also remained robust throughout July, with total securities turnover on the Singapore Exchange rising 27% year-on-year to S$33.8 billion, reflecting continued investor participation as the STI climbed 5.3% month-on-month to its latest record high.
