The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a short-term thunderstorm warning for several areas across Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah, with heavy rain and strong winds expected until 12 noon today.
The warning covers the whole of Perlis, as well as Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Yan and Pendang in Kedah. In Johor, the affected areas are Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru.
In East Malaysia, the alert includes Marudi in Sarawak’s Miri division, as well as Tawau, Pitas and Kudat in Sabah.
MetMalaysia said the warning is issued when there are indications of thunderstorms capable of producing rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres per hour, or when such conditions are expected to persist for more than an hour.
The department advised residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant as heavy downpours and strong winds could trigger localized flash floods, fallen trees and traffic disruptions.
The thunderstorm warning is a short-term advisory and is valid for a period not exceeding six hours from the time of issuance.
