Motorists heading home this evening have been urged to brace for heavy congestion after the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued another thunderstorm warning covering Kuala Lumpur and several parts of Peninsular Malaysia until 7pm today.
The warning forecasts thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across Kuala Lumpur, as well as parts of Selangor, including Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Hulu Langat, raising the likelihood of slower traffic during the evening rush hour.
Other affected areas include Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang dan Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar and Kinta), Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Bentong, Bera and Rompin), Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu and Jempol), Johor (Segamat, Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi), as well as parts of Sabah, including Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Ranau, Kota Belud and Kota Marudu.
MetMalaysia said the warning is issued when there are indications of thunderstorms capable of producing rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour, or when such conditions are expected to persist for more than an hour.
The weather alert is valid for no more than six hours from the time it is issued, and road users are advised to drive cautiously, allow extra travel time and remain alert for possible flash floods and reduced visibility, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
