Nvidia is in discussions to provide a financing backstop worth about US$250 billion for OpenAI as part of a large-scale data centre project in the United States, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the newspaper said the proposed guarantees would enable the ChatGPT developer to lease a 10-gigawatt data centre campus being developed in southern Ohio by an energy subsidiary of Japan’s SoftBank.
If finalised, the arrangement would represent one of the largest infrastructure financing commitments tied to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence computing capacity.
The project comes as technology companies continue investing heavily in AI infrastructure to meet growing demand for advanced computing power and generative AI services.
Reuters said it could not immediately verify The Wall Street Journal report. Neither Nvidia, OpenAI nor SoftBank has publicly commented on the reported discussions.
